beautifuldecaymagazine's Journals on Buzznet

Company History

In the quiet suburbs of Fairfax, Virgina, founders Amir Fallah and Jay Littleton began Beautiful/Decay in 1996 as a small black & white "zine" while still in high school. Taking the name from a quote by artist Barry Mcgee (Twist) in graffiti zine 12oz. Prophet, “Beautiful/Decay” described everything Amir loved about emerging art and underground culture. Since then, Amir and his partners, Ben Osher and Fubz, have taken the publication from a black & white “zine” with a 3,000 copy circulation to a full color publication with an international distribution of more than 45,000 copies. The bi-coastal publication has branched out to create Beautiful/Decay branded books, curate art shows, develop event sponsorship programs, as well as launch a highly sought after artist’s series apparel line and various limited edition products.

Beautiful/Decay Magazine

Beautiful/Decay is founded on the theory, “if you can’t find it, make it.” Beautiful/Decay’s format is revolutionary in that it documents the convergence of fine art, graffiti, design, fashion, music and other relevant forms of art. We pride ourselves in exposing the magazine’s diverse readership to mediums, ideas and creative expressions that are not juxtaposed in any other independent publication.

Over the last decade, Beautiful/Decay has garnered a reputation for breaking never-before-seen artists, covering fine art with a youthful and informed point of view and being “THE” go-to handbook for Creative Directors, curators, collectors, artists, designers and musicians in the know.

Beautiful/Decay Apparel

B/D created an artist designed Apparel line in early 2006. Since its conception, Beautiful/Decay has strived to support emerging and established artists through the publication. Each of the artists featured on our one of a kind and highly succesful T-shirts have previously contributed to the magazine, creating a line that acts as “wearable art.” The shirts are available on our online store (http://www.indiemerchstore.com/beautifuldecay) and at high-end boutiques internationally.

Beautiful/Decay Online Shop

The B/D online shop has quickly become the destination for shoppers looking to find artist designed products, limited edition fashion collaborations and art collectibles. We sell everything from magazines, posters and books to fashion accessories, T-shirts and designer toys from art-based companies.. We are constantly restocking our inventory with new items, delivering only the freshest products.

Beautiful/Decay is pleased to celebrate the release of Issue X this Saturday, September 6th from 5-7pm at the Mark Moore gallery. They will also unveil the revitalized direction and scope of the magazine. Beautiful/Decay has expanded coverage of international art and design, while maintaining their characteristically fresh and informative approach. By delivering more of the innovative artists and designers that have established Beautiful/Decay’s reputation as an unparalleled contemporary art sourcebook, the magazine will further extend its support to the creative community.

The opening will feature an open bar provided by Grolsch, music from Billy the Kkid, and an artist’s reception for Ultrasonic International III.

About Issue X:
For Issue X, Beautiful/Decay is proud to include a dynamic range of features that loosely address the nature of representation and the ways in which it is replicated, manipulated and transmorphed through the artistic process.

Scott Anderson conflates a dissonant line-up of images derived from his personal vocabulary, whether dream catchers, lunar landscapes or beer bottles, to create science-fiction style landscapes at once familiar and foreign. Mala Iqbal also imagines alien vistas- that cleverly investigate the nature of representation and painting through her unique blend of magic, kitsch and a knack for the unexpected.

Michael Swaney chooses to narrate idiosyncratic, boyish-charmed scenes that reference both childhood nostalgia and adult irony, Jeff Whetstone captures uncanny photographs of graffiti-marked caves. The natural scenes, layered with human scribblings, document the phenomena of anonymous marking and the act of creating itself, referencing everything from the Paleolithic cave paintings of Lascaux, to ribald rants on bathroom stall walls. His re-cast panoramas of disorienting rocks are brought back into the realm of the familiar through banal human traces.

Barnaby Whitfield’s feverishly playful pastel distortions both attract and repulse with their candy-colored depictions of subtly grotesque figures. Beautiful/Decay will also interview duo design team Oh Yeah Studio, who gracefully merge pencil-sketch representational drawings with abstract computer modeled concepts, and explore Oliver Hibert’s hyper-colored images.

As usual, Beautiful/Decay will also feature a stellar line up of recent show reviews, from Los Angeles to New York and in between.

Artist: Sentimental Soy Cheese

Artist Bio:
Sentimental Soy Cheese is the collective moniker of 2 former regular human beings whose true identities may never be known. Their peculiar pseudonym came about due to a very emotional period of time when, after being lost in the wilderness for several days and having nothing but unusually large amounts of soy cheese as sustenance, the two finally found their way back to civilization where it was discovered they had been missing for several weeks. Over the next few months, both experienced an intense desire for the soy cheese which had presumably saved their lives, as well as regular shared lucid dreams, which revealed what had actually happened to the pair during those ardent lost days. Those events have never been publicly discussed and are shrouded in mystery, however what is known is that soon after, the two underwent a radical transformation and Sentimental Soy Cheese was formed. They then quickly took the design universe by storm with their unique take on the signs and symbols of society and have been virtually unstoppable ever since.
